What Affects a Pharmacy Technician’s Salary?

There are two types of pharmacy technicians, one who are professionally qualified and the other who has on the job practical experience.  The professional technician gets jobs in good pharmacological companies, hospitals, day care centers and multi brand pharmacy stores whereas the second category of technicians are employed with the mid-range pharmacists/local pharmacist and may also find openings in various government run centers throughout US. A pharmacy technician’s salary is entirely dependent on the ability and the skills of the technician to exhibit his knowledge of the trade.A pharmacy technician’s salary is dependent on many other factors as well. A brand new technician with no experience but with a certificate to prove his credentials will be most vulnerable to low starting salaries. Similarly, a person with no formal education in pharmacy but eager to help the pharmacist would also be in the lowest category of salary and perquisites.  Compare this with the technician who is having some experience in the field of pharmacy. This person would have a better salary structure than his junior counterpart. This is the ground rule, irrespective of whether the technician is qualified or not. So a pharmacy technician’s salary is to a certain extent dependent on the number of years that the technician has already put in the job.

A pharmacy technician’s salary is also influenced by the locality or the state in which he is employed. If a pharmacy technician is employed in the state of Alabama he would be drawing around $23K to $25K annually as compared to his counterpart in California or Hawaii who would be grossing anywhere between $35K to $40K annually. So a pharmacy technician’s salary is in this case is dependent on the geographical location, over which the technician has no control. It is physically impossible for all technicians to move over to California to pursue their careers.

Finally, what affects a pharmacy technician’s salary is decided by other miscellaneous factors like family connections with the profession, ability to multi-task along with the core job, and representing the firm where the technician works is a another way to ensure the top salary. Pharmacy technicians are here to stay, and with the added impetus from the major Government initiatives they are in for even happier times ahead
