You can make the decision of whether you want to work in retail pharmacy, hospitals, mail-order, internet pharmacies, clinics, for pharmaceutical wholesalers, or for the government. As you can see your options basically span across anywhere medications are sold.
The largest percentage of pharmacy technician work is in retail pharmacies. As a matter of fact about two-thirds of pharmacy technician work in retail locations. These locations include both independently owned locations, locations that are part of a drugstore, grocery store or mass retailer. These would include the technicians that you see in locations such as CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and many more. As we’ve come to an age of convenience it’s obvious why most pharmacy technician work in retail locations. Retail pharmacy are growing, what better way for retail locations such as grocery stores to add to their bottom line then to add a pharmacy location where consumers can pick up their mediations while they shop.
The next largest group of pharmacy technician work in hospitals. This group makes up about 22% of pharmacy technician employment. You will typically find these technicians working in the hospital pharmacy so that patients can obtain their prescribed medications before leaving the hospital. You may also find hospital pharmacy technicians work in various locations throughout the hospital preparing medications to be dispensed by nurses and other hospital staff members.
The remaining group of pharmacy technicians make up all the remaining employment locations for pharmacy techs. They could work in mail order or for internet pharmacies these technicians will usually work in office buildings or warehouses. They would simply fulfill orders under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Pharmacy techs work in clinics preparing meds, they may also work for Pharmaceutical wholesalers preparing medications to be shipped to retail locations. And lastly the government employs a small number of pharmacy technicians they are typically used the same way as regular pharmacy technician however they work on military installations.
